Mirror Dinghy Sailing

The Mirror is the World's most popular double handed sailing dinghy, low in price, light, seaworthy and easy to sail, the Mirror quickly achieved its objectives. Probably responsible for introducing more people to the delights of sailing than any other design, some have even gone on to win Olympic medals, the latest being Paul Goodison taking Gold in China. The Mirror is a real proper little boat, with its deep 'sit-in' cockpit, that inspires confidence for sailors of all ages and abilities, easy to sail but a challenge to sail well.

IMCA Trophy Info

In notes by Peter Russell (Australia) on the history of the Mirror Dinghy in Australia he records:

“Each competing country donated a trophy for presentation to heat winners of the Mirror World championship, held at Monnickendam, Holland 1976.”

Australia donated a trophy composed of deep green West Australian marble, shaped to represent a sail and polished on one face only. The polished face featured the “Southern Cross” constellation, inlaid in gold. The trophy was won by an Irish boat winner of the first heat (and 4th place overall). This trophy like a number of others has been lost or destroyed in the years since inception. The current trophy is actually the West Australian trophy won by the UK boat Funderbird sailed by Roy and Graeme Partridge. A copy of the results would indicate which heat or heats Funderbird won.

The African Drum beat trophy was destroyed by Australian Customs in 2003 because it was made of hide, a prohibited import to Australia without quarantine clearance.
